The number of British pubs planning to open village shops or provide other community services has doubled in the past year. With figures from the Campaign for Real Ale showing two pubs are closing every day, record numbers of pub landlords hit by rising prices and falling trade are seeking advice on how to diversify.

The Black Swan in Ravenstonedale, Cumbria, is one of 354 pubs and small hotels that have been helped over the past ten years by a charity called Pub is The Hub.

Ravenstonedale residents had to make a 12-mile round trip to buy a pint of milk until landlady Louise Dinnes opened a village shop selling newspapers, groceries and local crafts."The sense of community and goodwill that we've got from opening that shop has just been unbelievable, you couldn't buy it," she said.
"There's lots of locals who we'd never see in the pub, but everybody goes to the shop."
